The sun. We, as living breathing creatures, owe a lot to the sun. It is our greatest source of energy; the reason life can flourish on our planet. On Saturday, April 12, over thirty teachers and a principal from seven school districts in the Houston area attended Guru Vandana (Teacher Appreciation), at Keshav Smriti. Organized by the Hindu Education Foundation (HEF), a project of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, the utsav allowed hardworking teachers to be honored and appreciated for their endless work by their own students. In the spirit of respect for their Gurus (Teachers), children from Houston area Balagokulams invited their teachers to the event and presented them with a token of appreciation.

The great Indian epic Ramayan was presented by 60 kids from Bloomington - Normal, Illinois, USA with all fanfare and festivity on June 8 ,2008 at the prestigious Bloomington Center of Performing Arts (BCPA). This event was attended by more than 600 spectators who appreciated the talent and enthusiasm of kids enacting the scenes from this timeless epic. The occasion was the grand finale of "Kaun Banega Ramayan Expert" (KBRE) contest. This contest was organized simultaneously across towns in USA by Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) .

This year, all the Chicago chapters of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh participated in India Day Parade planned on 61st Independence Day of India. This included Downtown, Naperville , Schaumburg, Lake County , and Ramayan Shakha. The HSS float was decorated with Bhagwa Dhwaj, Bharat Flag and American Flag. Pictures of Bharat Mata, Swami Vivkananda, Chhatrapati Shivaji, Maharana Pratap, Jhansi-ki-Raani Laxmibai, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Emblem of Satyameva Jayate, and postures of Surya Namaskaar, Hindu Exhibition, Bharat map also adorned the float.

Diwali - The festival of lights. When we ignite our inner light, the darkness automatically gets dispelled. People all over Bharat celebrate this wonderful festival with much fanfare and excitement. Just because we are not in Bharat does not mean that we are not having the same excitement about our festivals. Reston and Sudarshan Shakha teams came together with great gusto, to celebrate Diwali for the Indian families in Reston, Sterling and Ashburn areas.

"Serving the poor is the true service to the God". During 2008 Diwali 4 shakhas in Midwest Sambhag - Abhimanyu shakha at Shaumburg, Bloomington shakha, Eagen shakha and Shree Ram shakha, Indianapolis took up food drive to bring into reality this age old adage from our Hindu scriptures. Although all the shakhas took up this initiative independently, the common thread that seemed to be running through them was the urge to something for the society in which they live. That was also thought of as a reasonable way to assimilate in the local community.

On August 2nd, HSS Volunteers from Naperville-Aurora shakha visited and tied the Rakhi to Hon. Mayor of the City of Naperville and his staff. The Mayor of Naperville said in his official comment: "I am pleased to see HSS taking steps in creating an awareness about India's great traditions, Rakhi's event is a very important one and has a great significance especially during the troubled times, I truly believe that such events bring about a change in the society and help create a peaceful society.
