HSS Celebrates 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda! Print E-mail
Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA Inc. (HSS) concluded its inaugural event for its year-long “SV150” celebration of Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth  anniversary on January 12, 2013. HSS held inaugural events at over 100 locations nationwide attended by more than 7,000 participants and guests. The inaugural event marked Swami Vivekananda’s actual birthday on January 12, 1863.  HSS launched SV150 with the support of over three hundred other organizations, including other Hindu-American organizations, Indian-American  organizations, and even yoga and kirtan associations. Swami Chidananda  and Swami Varadananda of the Vivekananda Vedanta Society Chicago and  Swami Dayananda Sarswati of the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam also offered their blessings.
While appreciating vision and leadership of HSS, U.S. Representative the best for Universal peace and harmony. U.S. Representative Bill Foster of Illinois’ 11th District joinedthe celebrations held in Naperville, IL. While thanking HSS for the  invitation, he encouraged the attendees to follow Swamiji’s message of  Universal peace.   In addition to aforementioned elected officials, Mayor of Mayor Jackie Holcombe of Morrisville, NC, Mayor Bill Clarkson of San Ramon, CA, Hon  Anand Kumar Jha,  Consul (Community Affairs,Information and Culture) for Consulate General of India, Rose Herrera, San Jose City Council Member, Mr Domingo, Representative from State Senator Mr. Jim Beall’s office as well as many other community leaders, entrepreneurs, educators attended events nationwide. 

The Launch of Dharma Bee Contest

As part of the inaugural event, HSS also opened the registration portal for its first-ever DharmaBeeTM, a nationwide quiz contest for children between kindergarten and eighth grade, at www.dharmabee.org. This edition of the DharmaBeeTM will have questions on Bhagwan Sri Krishna along with the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda.
The inaugural event also included the premier of a twenty-minute video produced by HSS on the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda.  Dr.  Yelloji Mirajkar, Executive Director, HSS USA commented that this was  the great beginning of celebration and hoped that it would help to  spread the message of Universal Peace Through Dharma and Yoga. HSS will conduct other events in 2013 as part of its observance of  Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary. These will include programs for high school and college students, such as a traveling exhibit on  Swami Vivekananda’s life visiting major university campuses and “Vacation with Vivekananda” excursions to locations where Swami  Vivekananda visited during his travels in the United States; and a  culminating “Dharma and Yoga Fest,” scheduled simultaneously on a  regional basis to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s groundbreaking address at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago on September 11,  1893. HSS conducts a structured values education program through its 150  chapters nationwide to develop strong character and teamwork and  leadership skills and to organize a dynamic and flourishing  Hindu-American community. The year 2013 is Swami Vivekananda’s 150th Birth Anniversary.  Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, USA, Inc. (HSS) is planning to celebrate this occasion with various programs throughout the year. HSS already has formulated a 5-point action plan to spread Swamiji’s message of Universal Peace through Dharma and Yoga.

  • National contest for children on the stories of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Krishna
  • Field trips, adventure activities, and sewa activities for youth
  • Nationwide mobile exhibition on Swami Vivekananda’s life and message
  • Lecture series on Hinduism in Universities during spring and fall semesters of 2013
  • Dharma & Yoga Fest to commemorate Swamiji’s Chicago Address – September 11, 2013

The launch ceremony will be held on Swamiji’s birthday, Saturday January 12th, 2013 at 120+ places throughout US. A brief video on Swamiji’s life will be shown on this day. Participants will get the first-hand information on HSS’s 5 point action plan. They will also enjoy the practice of yoga (surya-namaskar) in a friendly environment.
