HSS announces fourth year of "Health for Humanity" Marathon Print E-mail

Surya Namaskar Yagna (Marathon)Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA (HSS) announces its fourth year of an offering (“yajna”) of one million Sun Salutations, known as Surya Namaskar, to create awareness  about Yoga and its advantages in achieving a healthy body, mind and spirit.

Surya Namaskar integrates simple Yoga postures of well-balanced movements in 10-steps that along with easy breathing technique can provide immense health benefits to both body and mind. Therefore, “Surya Namaskar Yagna” is also rightly, termed as “Health for Humanity” marathon.

Each year Hindus worldwide celebrate January 14th as Makar Sankranti – a day that marks a change of season as the sun enters the sign of Capricorn or Makar.  Makar Sankranti ushers in longer days; thus the festivity symbolizes sunshine in life.  Therefore, to mark this occasion, HSS will conduct a collective Surya Namaskar Yajna from January 16th to January 31st, 2010.

Since 2006, HSS is conducting Surya Namaskar Yajna, and in all these years various Yoga Centers, community  organizations, regardless of individual faiths and beliefs, have participated in this “Health for Humanity” marathon all across the United States. Last year, over 6,500 people from 34 states participated in this unique marathon  offering over 700,000 Surya Namaskar.  Community leaders and many elected officials across USA have appreciated this initiative and encouraged their residents to participate and take the advantages for overall healthy life style.

This year also, HSS invites community groups, Yoga centers and students of all ages to participate and learn, this unique Yoga and continue practicing beyond the Health for Humanity Marathon.  This program is open to people of all ages, gender, and races.

Details of this event, training resources, and advertising aids to make this project successful are available on the official HSS SNY website: www.hssus.org/sny.  For questions or suggestions, email “sny(at)hssus(dot)org”
