Guidelines for Rachanas:
| two lines (ll) | represent the beginning and the end of a line | | one line (l) | represent beats, markings after every set of beats…for example in dwajaropanam, each set has 3 swaras in it…therefore after every three swaras, there is this marking | | colon (:) | at the end of line if there is this colon, that means that line has to be repeated (from ll to ll)
| | dash (-) | a dash mark means that there should be no sound at that point, it will be silent
| | comma (,) | the same swara as before the comma should continue at that spot
| | accent marks | accent marks on top of the swaras means that it is the high sounding swara, if the accent mark is on the bottom then it is the low sounding swara…for example, Ņ in dwajaropanam is the low Ni

The first line with colon in it, ll ……….. :ll , always has to be repeated at the end, after the last line for all rachanas (except the dwajaropanam)
